Should Microsoft cut off apple completley resrticting ALL microsoft products from running on mac???

Okay I am a windows user and I am so sick of Mac fans doing nothing but critize windows and try to put down microsoft and all windows users and yet they use microsofts software (microsoft office, etc.)

The way I see it, I say Microsoft should cut all ties with apple. getting rid of office for mac and disabling all previous macs with office already on it. Restrict apple from making a computer that can run windows and any other type of windows software.

Apple seems to be doing fine with it's itechnology so I say microsoft should cut all ties with apple and let apple be independent of microsoft.

opinions please

Should Microsoft cut off apple completley resrticting ALL microsoft products from running on mac???
um, they can't stop 'em. that's like GM saying, hey all you Nissan truck owners. We're gonna make it so that you can't use gas any more to run your vehicles.

You just can't. They'd say, um, too bad, ppl will buy gas wherever they want. There's millions of gas stations.

Same with macs. They buy their own copy of Windows. If anything, Bill Gates likes it because it sells more copies of Windows Vista!

The macbook pro runs Vista the FASTEST! It's a fact. No other pc can run Vista quicker. Google it buddy.

If Bill Gates doesn't wanna make Office for macs any more that's his choice, but one of losing money.

Disabling macs that have office on 'em already? Gee. sounds like Bill Gates alright. Sounds like you have a class action lawsuit on your hands now.
Reply:why, surly the whole point of making money is making your product available to as many people as possible. i don't understand your argument !!
Reply:In response to "Mac fans doing nothing but criticize windows" What do you think Windows users do of MAC's? How bout everyone find what they like and use it and stop telling others what to use. I know, like that will ever happen.

Just my 2 cents.
Reply:Luke... I agree with you.

Luke, I am your father... an' yo uncle.
Reply:I'm a windows user too, but I'm not dumb. Apple products have a lot going for them. When was the last time you heard of a virus that attacks Apple products.

By allowing windows products to run on Apple Machines, then they too can be bothered by some of the windows annoyances, that we have come to enjoy!
Reply:A lot of your responses are unfortunately quite uninformed...

Here's the actual happenings between the two companies. It is indeed true that mac's can run windows. My brother has a mac in the other room with windows xp running on it. It's indeed a nice option having both xp and OS x. What makes the Mac system good is the OS. The rest of the system is using all pc based parts. They run Xeon 771 socket processors just like a pc. Once they switched over from IBM processors to intel it made everything much easier for Apple.

Now the truth....Yes apple can run windows xp. But did you know that there are those trying to run Mac OS X on pc's as well? This is the only sole reason anyone should buy a apple machine. Strictly for the operating system. But did you know that OS X runs a hardware check for it to even install? Apple is being just as dirty as microsoft. For Apple's OS, upon install it runs a check to see if it has specific hardware on the motherboard...If it's not there it refuses to install. This is apple's method of not allowing pc users to install Max OS X.

There are patches you can grab that will work around this and let you install Max OS X on a pc...think of it as the PC's method of bootcamp...Only it's community run by individuals and not Microsoft itself. Did you also know that apple has tried to stop these communities from their work?...Apple is just as dirty as Microsfot..They are both attempting the same thing. To completely shut down the use of running their operating system on their competitors hardware.

Now in regards to which performs better?..They are both exactly the same. Apples are running custom Socket 771 based motherboards. With Xeon 771 based processors. These are the exact same products that have been used in PC workstations for YEARS....apple has just adopted it since they are able to outperform IBM's powerpc architecture as well as offer Apple computers the ability to install windows. Whoever claims a apple runs better than a PC is spouting false information. They use the same processors and offer the same performance. You can't compare a Xeon setup against a home desktop. Xeons are built for workstations. Pit it up against a matching pc workstation and you'll see the same results. Also the PC versions are MUCH cheaper since you're not paying for the "apple" name. The only thing apple has going for it is the operating system. Besides that they are nothing special. For those who swear by apple only products...They are simply lackies or just misinformed...

My brother recently just spent 6 grand on a Mac Pro dual socket dual-core system running at 2.66 ghz (two 2.66 dual cores = 4 cores). It also has 8 gigs of ram with a puny geforce 7300 graphics card.

For 6 grand I can build a monstrous pc workstation. Dual socket with even faster processors, a top grade dual socket 771 motherboard, a propfessional LCD priced around 1500 (Sorry to say..Apple Cinema Displays are not the cream of the crop), a cutting edge graphics card, two 10k rpm raptor hard drives along with 2 storage 1 TB hard drives, new mouse, and keyboard. Now tell me..Which is the better buy?..The pc will also outperform the mac quite easily...

The fact is..When you buy a mac..You're buying a name..That's all. Don't let them dupe you into thinking you're getting the best machine possible. They are just overpriced PC's with hardware limitations since you can't choose the parts you want. Ohh what's that?..You want the latest FireGL or Quadro graphics card for your workstation?..Sorry..that's not available on the mac's..But we have the last generation model priced at the new generations price tag of 1,500 dollars....would you like that?.... Garbage..

I'd only buy macs for the OS...But considering you can run Mac OS X with a little know how on a PC..What's the point? Mac will do anything it can to stop this. Which they will end up failing like most companies due trying to make their hardware/OS exclusive.

Ohhh BTW....For those claiming Mac OS X is the most secure operating system. Sorry...But once again you're misinformed. The truth is windows Vista is currently the most secure operating system. You must be asking "Then why are all thes mac I've seen virus free?"...Simple..The market is PC based. Apples market share is incredibly small compared to PC's...They are gaining ground though. It's all do to hype and marketing...As well as the fact that they can run windows now....

I'll leave it off with one more addition...the fabled Mac OSX Leopard, is already running on pc's...Why pay so much more when you can get what's good about mac's working on a pc?
Reply:Apple products have been superior in the graphic arts, music and video production industry for quite some time now. However workplaces that run primarily on Apple products also need the support of Office applications. OpenOffice has done a good job of supporting that for Mac users but still not as reliable and up to date as MS Office I think.

I love my Mac for my own business and hobbies but also have my Win XP machine sittin there for work which I hardly use anymore but even then I do not think one is superior over the other. It all depends on the user and what the primary intent of the machine is. I think if MS were to cut out Apple completely they will have a hard time keeping their young user base since they will have no choice to go with 100% Mac, get used to that and keep that tradition throughout their life just like we did with Windows.
Reply:Because Apple fans annoy you, you think Microsoft should pull out of a market which provides them with revenue? That seems like a rather silly reason for them to do so.

They would probably suffer another antitrust lawsuit if they did so anyway.

Microsoft Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition for Mac wont open?

I have a Mac. Yesterday my Microsoft Word doesn't open anymore. Before I didn't have problems with it at all and when I double click it on my dock, It opens. But just yesterday I double-clicked Microsoft Word so I can type my homework, It doesnt open! The blue W icon which is Microsoft Office just jumps up and down on my dock then stops. Then it told me If I want to send report to Microsoft, so I agreed. But now it's not opening anything. It just jumps then stops. I also checked if I can open PowerPoint and Excel. It worked. Just Microsoft Word doesn't work and I use it more than Powerpoint and Excel! What happened? I even reinstalled only Microsoft Word from the CD and the other one still doesnt open.

Microsoft Office 2004 Student and Teacher Edition for Mac wont open?
if it is a legally licensed copy and you have the key for it just register with microsoft. it only takes a few minutes and this is quite likely the source of your problems.

Microsoft vs Mac? Confused!?

Do any of you out there prefer Microsoft products, software, etc? What are its advantages? Why do majority people have PCs and run Microsoft's operating system and office on it? Why would most people have PCs and run Microsoft software when they could have apple/mac which crashes less? Many people says there are more crashes, but can it be that bad when Vista sold 20 million copies in Feburary? Do you like Microsoft products? Why or why not? Thanx to all who reply. My topic for my project is on Microsoft and apparently Im confused on why people do not like the company and its products, as I use a PC with Microsoft software. Show me the light.

Microsoft vs Mac? Confused!?
As with any major product, someone will complain about it. I personally enjoy microsoft and as an answer to the # of crashes....

A computer only does what the user tells it to do

so when 90% of computer owners use microsoft, there is obviously going to be a substantially higher number of crashes and complaints than the mac.

Think of it like our government, many many people do not like it but they live with it anyways because it is simple enough for them to live their lives the way the chooose to.

In conclusion, people just prefer to use microsoft because

A: it is more popular so more people will have problems requiring a big and helpful customer Service.

B: easy and simple to use because it is everywhere

There are no real advantages to using microsoft products over apples other than more people use it creating a bigger market and more products.
Reply:PCs are great if you like the multiple of combinations and types you can build and modify. Macs are great but you pay a premium for any accessories and software is not as prolific. Just look at the net and see what it caters for and you'll see it's 80% PC despite all the bugs you get with Windows. There ARE other operating systems to install on a PC, does Mac do that? So I go with what I know and have built over the years. Get a Mac straight out of box is best you can ever do. You don't go to any average retailer to get Mac stuff. It's almost all proprietary, they don't mention that. Good luck!
Reply:I use PC, but i would way that Mac is better in terms of security. Microsoft is, other people say, 5 years behind from mac technology. Mac also has better interface and is better looking. However, mac is much expensive than PC's.

On the other hand, PC has more software that are made for exclusively for Microsoft. PC can be upgraded much easier than Mac.
Reply:I don't like either.

In my opinion Linux is far more stable and easier to secure and configure to your individual or group needs.
Reply:windows is insecure because almost every virus is made for it

mac is for artist or just working on media stuff but they dont use exe format so is more secure and fast

why confusing, use linux,it has more media and grafical effects,is faster(really, cause i use the 3 OS here)and linux is literally free

u can download it in ubuntu.com or something like that.

normal people use windows because most of the computers come with windows and they are ignorants thinking the only thing they know is the best belive me,windows sucks.
Reply:well a PC can be upgraded easily were a mac must be replaced to upgrade it. i prefer PCs
Reply:You have answered your question in your question itself. Microsoft has a pool of softwares it' own and others also. For any purpose you search Microsoft window supported software you will get but Mac not only limited but comparatively no software support. You ask 10 persons who use window's this question.

If It is .exe in windows than for Mac what it is. .exe stands for executable. In my opinion 90% will not answer that it is .dmg.

Microsoft Office won't accept copy and paste from emails or web?

for a long time I have use Microsoft Office Professional w/o problems. Now if I copy (highlight) anything from my yahoo e mail or the web and then open up Microsoft Word and want to paste..i get an hour glass and eventually with all my clicking to try to get this hour glass to paste what I copied..i get 'program not responding'

Now I can get it pasted by doing this 'new' process (which I don't want to have to do every time) i copy text in my email or from the web. Then I open up microsoft word. Click on edit, then paste special. Paste as text ( i have to click on unformatted text). I have to do this now each time i want to get something into Microsoft word. (I can type in the Microsoft word a new document..) point is..i must have done something to change a setting or whatever??? i dont' want to have to go thru this process..helppppppp get me back to where I simply clicked on copy in my e mail/web page..opened up Microsoft word..and clicked on paste and it appeared.

Microsoft Office won't accept copy and paste from emails or web?
Hi!

I've been unable to find the answer so far, but have exactly the same problem. I can copy and paste anything else to Word, but not so much as one letter from my Yahoo email. I can, however, copy and paste it if I open my email in Firefox rather than I.E., which I normally use. So, I think it must be a Yahoo problem, but I don't know.
Reply:Hmmm, that's interesting. I do use Windows Classic view,

but I've been doing so for a long time too! Anyway, thanks

for the tip. Report It

Reply:Seems somehow WORD got corrupted.... rather than breaking your head... reinstall "Microsoft Office Professional ".
Reply:Since the web pages are now more advance and sophisticated, copying from a web page is no more like copying a text.(in some cases). so when you try to copy and then paste you will find that you are going to wait so much time until the word stops responding which is due to analyzing the data,

to prevent this, try copying some lines each time and try not to select by mistake some tables and columns and links which you don't want.

thanks.

Microsoft Emergency Update Today?

Did everybody who uses Windows get the special security patch that Microsoft came out with today?

Microsoft today 4/3/07 issued an "emergency" patch to address vulnerabilities in Windows.

"Microsoft Corp. plans to patch a security hole in Windows on Tuesday related to an animated cursor that hackers have used to launch attacks after users click on links to malicious Web sites."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070402/wr_n...

......

"The MS07-017 update includes patches for a total of seven animated cursor (.ani) vulnerabilities, three affecting Windows Vista. In addition to Windows Vista, the update applies to Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 SP1, and Windows Server 2003 SP2"

http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=365

.....

Microsoft must have felt this update was extremely important as it is issuing the patch, one week ahead of its monthly scheldueled "Patch Tuesday" which is the 2nd Tuesday of every month.

If you don't have your computer set-up for automatic updates, you can get 'em manually by clicking Tools then Windows Updates in Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Emergency Update Today?
I also got the update. It sure does seem like a serious issue. I got mine through automatic updates.

Help with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007?

I just bought the program, and it's working fine on my computer. It won't let me use regular old Microsoft Word anymore, though! I actually like the old version better! Can I still get to it?

Also, will documents made on Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 be compatible with computers that run the old version of Microsoft Word? What I mean is, will I be able to transfer files made on Microsoft Office Home and Student to other computers that just use the regular Microsoft Word? Will the other computer be able to open Microsoft Office Home and Student files??

-AND, if I uninstall Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007, will Microsoft Word become available to me again??

Please help!!!!

Help with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007?
If you saved the documents in 2003 format they will work fine. If not then you will have to get the converter that is available at Microsoft's website. If you upgraded and uninstall 2007 you might get your old version back but I would not count on it.

Microsoft .NET Framework?

Okay, so I'm trying to clear out all the unneeded programs that are on my computer at the moment. Microsoft .NET Framework - yes I realise that this software is essential for most Microsoft programs to operate properly. The thing is, my computer says that I have 3 versions of the framework installed.

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB928366)

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0

So, I thought to myself, I seriously doubt that these are the latest installments of the program. So I get on Wikipedia, and up comes the .NET Framework page. Huzzah. It tells me that the latest version is 3.5.21022.8 and was released on November 19th 2007.

Now this is where you guys come in. I want to know, that if I download this version off the Microsoft website and install it to my computer, if I can uninstall all the previous versions of the framework, and have all my programs work the same.

Churr guys, you rock.

Microsoft .NET Framework?
U can unistall all the older versions and install just the latest ones...Dont worry if u remove the ones installed...

U can check the latest ones here..

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/hi-in/windows...

Do rate me if it helped ya..
Reply:I would leave them on incase anything happens and you have to roll back. They don't take up much hard drive space and they don't eat up resources.

Lottery scam letters are sent out by the thousands and thousands every day.

There are only two things the bad guys want.... your money and your identity.

Unless you have bought a ticket, you CANNOT have won a prize. There are no such things as "email" draws or any other lottery where "no tickets were sold".

If you have an email stating you have won millions, delete it, it's a scam!!
Reply:SCAM. You WILL lose your money if you give your information. It's a very common and old scamming tactic.

Besides, when did you join an online lottery?%26gt;

Microsoft ,What do you want to monopolize today? (Facebook…)?

The recent Microsoft incursion on Facebook, the popular web that offers itself as a social utility that its growing faster than Myspace, seems to me as a desperate measure from Microsoft to control every single aspect they can put hands on. They recently loose a trial in Europe raised against them for monopolizing the market. What do you think about this recent move of Microsoft? Micro$oft will use FaceBook for advertising purposes and gaining more money from advertisers on pages.

Bill Gate$ is a very smart man. He is extremely rich from his knowledge and business practices.

His software is overpriced but if he lowered the price on the operating systems, not only would he probably double his money, but all computer systems would be Micro$oft.

I feel he could still be extremely wealthy by charging $100.00 for an operating system.

His business plans, which will make him much more money, just make people mad because they cannot do it.

Is Microsoft e-mail a hoax?

I received an email with the following content and want to obtain validity .........or is it just a hoax? The e-mail said this had been on the Good Morning America Show but I can't find any archives on Bill Gates nor Microsoft paying for sending emails and how are they tracked anyway?

"Microsoft and AOL are now the largest Internet companies and in an effort to make sure that Internet Explorer remains the most widely used program, Microsoft and AOL are running an e-mail beta test. When you forward this e-mail to friends, Microsoft can and will track it (If you are a Microsoft Windows user) For a two weeks time period. For every person that you forward this e-mail to, Microsoft will pay you $245.00 For every person that you sent it to that forwards it on, Microsoft will pay you $243.00 and for every third person that receives it, You will be paid $241.00. Within two weeks, Microsoft will contact you for your address and then send you a check."

Is Microsoft e-mail a hoax?
Yes it is a hoax. Thank you for asking and not just sending it around.

It's been around since the 90's when AOL was more popular and apparently hasn't died yet.
Reply:Yeah it's hoax. Been around for years and. Think about how much money Microsoft would actually have to pay out of it were true. Billions.
Reply:I have received this e mail several times in the past 8 years. I did it the first time I got it and nothing. I think there is a webdite called snopes.com that verifies hoaxes on the internet. I know several people that have done this and got nothing.
Reply:Just always remember this, "You never get anything free!"

If it's too good to be true, it probibly is a hoax!
Reply:hoax, Microsoft would go out of business if they did that.
Reply:Hi,

All those types of emails are hoaxes. I used to work for Microsoft customer care, they have a dedicated section for charity work and will not send unsolicited emails. By the way, same goes for any email you receive looking to confirm bank account details etc... Delete them!!

A Microsoft ChristmasXXXfunny or notXXXstar if funnyXXXmy last joke everXXX?

NORTH POLE (API) - MICROSOFT announced an agreement with Santa Claus Industries to acquire Christmas at a press conference held via satellite from Santa's summer estate somewhere in the southern hemisphere. In the deal, Microsoft would gain exclusive rights to Christmas, Reindeer, and other unspecified inventions. In addition, Microsoft will gain access to millions of households through the Santa Sleigh.

The announcement also included a notice that beginning Dec 9, 1998, Christmas and the Reindeer names would be copyrighted by Microsoft. This unprecedented move was facilitated by the recently acquired MS Court. Microsoft stated its commitment to "all who have made Christmas great," and vowed to "make licensing of the Christmas and Reindeer names available to all." It is believed that the guidelines for licensing these names, due before Halloween, will be very strict.

When asked "Why buy Christmas?" Bill Gates replied "Microsoft has been working on a more efficient delivery mechanism for all of our products for some time, but recognized that the Santa Sleigh has some immediate benefits. We'll use it first for the next release of Windows and Office 98."

In a multimedia extravaganza, the attendees were shown a seemingly endless video stream of products that make up the deal. It ended with a green and red version of the Microsoft logo, and a new Christmas 98 trademark, leading into the announcement of the first product from the deal.

Vixen, the new Director of Holidays and Celebrations said, "The first step is to assimilate Christmas within the Microsoft Organization. This will take some time, so don't expect any changes this year." She continued, "our big plans are for next year, when we release Christmas 99. It will be bigger and better than last year." She further elaborated that "Windows 95 users who sign up with MS Network will get sneak previews of Christmas[99] as early as November first."

Christmas 98 is scheduled for release in December of 1998, though one unnamed source said that it is dangerously close to the end of the year and may slip into the first half of 1999. An economist at Goldman Sachs explained that a slip would be catastrophic to next year's economy and the nation's tax revenue, possibly requiring the IRS to move the deadline for filing income tax returns to three months after Christmas, whenever that was. "But it could be good in the long term," he explained. "With Microsoft controlling Christmas, we may see it move to May or June, which are much slower months for retailers. This may serve to even out the economy over the year."

When asked if other holidays are being considered, Mr. Gates explained that "Christmas is the flagship of holidays, so we wanted to start there. Not all holidays are available for sale, and the remaining will have to show a good long-term business," suggesting that holidays with a short history may not be in the plans.

Though specific terms of the agreement were withheld, a Santa official confirmed that the deal was "sizeable, even for a man of Santa's stature."

Some analysts think that Santa has saturated the Holiday market, and is looking for a means to expand his business to year 'round products and services. Others contend that the Jolly Red Man is looking to retire in Redmond.

A spokesperson for the most famous Reindeer could not be reached for comment.

I've received it a number of times and its a form of phishing. Its a scam to get your bank details just like the Nigerian with millions. DO NOT RESPOND.
Reply:Scam. Don't send them ANY information.
Reply:No, this is a scam. If you reply, then they will ask you for bank info to make the transfer of funds and clean out your bank account. Note in the paragraph before Sincerely, that corporation is misspelled so is Bill Gates last name.
Reply:It's a scam. The key words to look out for here are "Tax Payment". So you send them a few bucks to pay the "taxes due" on the winnings and never hear from them again.

Great scam. Always some dummies will answer.
Reply:It's spam or a trick, guaranteed. Good job checking first.
Reply:Yup these guys are so smart that they come up with different kinds of schemes every now and than. Most of these emails are coming from Nigeria. I get these emails too.. I place them as spam but still they keep coming every time with some new format. They are bypassing the spam act 2003. Since it states one should provide opt / unsubscribe link, mailer email and few other things..

Its hard for us to report them as spam; even though we do it all the time.. Does somebody have a better solution to this misery...
Reply:SCAM!! Do not respond. Remember this truth: Nobody will ever give you something for nothing. Not ever. If you have not entered a lottery you cannot win a lottery. These scammers are hoping some greedy fool with provide them with enough information to empty their bank account.

A BIG CLUE IS ALL THE MISSPELLINGS - Especially of Bill Gates name (Bill Gate)

Microsoft?

whats microsoft best known for? what is your favorite thing about microsoft?

Microsoft?
bein able to help people do great projects and my favorite thing would be the word art

Microsoft?

For those who have a Zune, how do you like it?

I'm thinking about getting one for my birthday.

Microsoft?
I received a Zune for Christmas, and have been very happy with it. It's easy to interface with my computer, the battery life has been good (I take it into work, and play it for 6+ hours). I find that the layout is a lot more comfortable to use than an iPod, and am glad that the "wheel" feature wasn't integrated into the Zune. Pushing the toggle is a lot more intuitive and isn't nearly as sensitive on the iPod. Managing music is pretty easy, though it does require the Zune software to use (this would have been much better as an "upgrade" to the existing Microsoft media already on most PCs). I don't use the radio player much, but it does have decent reception. And it's solid enough construction that I don't feel bad when I jostle it or bump it into things. I think 30gbs is a rediculous amount of space for music and videos. I've loaded nearly my entire CD collection (about 120 CDs) and still have more than have the space left on the Zune to fill. I'll never listen to all my music in one sitting, or even in the space of a week!

I think Clarix's review is spot on with the detriments: it's not the most portable device in the world. I ended up buying an extra cord that had an outlet plug/lighter plug for when I travel. It wasn't very expensive, but it would have been nice to at least have the outlet plug for traveling included with the Zune (I suppose this is just a detriment of the 21st century, where it seems everything has accessories and you can't get a complete package). The display is pretty good, but a bit fuzzy at times, which can be detrimental for when using the Zune to play movies. Plus the large glass face tends to attract dirt and streaks easier, so I'd recommend getting something to protect it.

Otherwise, I think it's a good product to purchase.
Reply:If you dont have time to read my exhaustive review on the zune, i'd reccomend holding

off on the 1st generation zune. I've owned 2 and they were a pain. Wait for the

bigger and better ones to come out!

Since pretty much everybody knows about the ipod, I will focus on my TOTALLY ORIGINAL

review of the zune. For the record, I have owned an ipod, 2 zunes, and a psp. Also, I

do not own a mac and I dont associate with apple geeks, likewise with microsoft

geeks.

Here it is: The Zune...

An Underdeveloped product with tons of potential when it is fixed!

I think we were all surprised when Microsoft announced a new mp3 player, dubbed by

many to be a new "Ipod Killer". I mean, it looked so cool when the new pictures came

out, the fresh advertising campaign, "Welcome to the Social". How could you not like

something like this? And when you see it in person and play with it a little bit, it

was actually really fun to use! You could stick your own picture in the background,

listen to the fm radio, and do quite a few other really cool things that the ipod

cannot do.

For the sake of this argument, though im not an apple fanboy, i'll compare the zune

to an apple ipod. As you all are aware, the ipod stakes the biggest share of the mp3

market and is therefore the zune's biggest competitor.

Here were my first really good impressions

-Packaging: When I first got my zune, I was quite impressed with the packaging.

Everything was in its right place. Unlike the ipod, where you have to download Itunes

from the internet, those without an internet connection will do fine. This is because

a software cd is included, which will get get you up and running in no time at all.

Also, unlike an ipod, when you first power up the zune, you will notice that you have

pre-loaded content. This includes movies, photos, and music. Not bad stuff either!

-Big, bright screen: This was perhaps the most noticebale feature. Many people were

dissatisfied with their ipod video's small screen, so this appeared to be a clincher

for many people. Full Screen album art is available, which makes the listening

experience more pleasant. You could tilt the player's screen horizontally to make the

most out of your videos and photos. A zoom feature for photos is also available.

Battery life is slightly longer on a zune than an ipod, with a claimed four hours.

-FM Radio: Cnet.com, a well-known technophile review site, once conducted a poll with

ipod users on which extra feature they wished had built-in to the ipod. Guess what

topped the list? The designers of the zune one-upped the design with the radio by

imoplementing RDS, which allows the artist and song title of the music played on the

radio to be displayed. This means that you wont have to keep guessing the name of a

good song that is playing. The headphone jack acts as reciever, so a good pair of

headphones will come in handy. Even with the bundled headphones, I had no problems

with radio reception.

-Wireless Sharing: This feature really came out of nowhere and no one expected an mp3

player to wirelessly share songs with another person's zune. I've tried out this

feature on two zune's and this feature works just fine. However, these two zunes were

both in the store and not my own. This feature truly made the zune fulfill the

"welcome to the social" motto

-Overall Design: As a relative newcomer to the media player scene, i'll admit that

the zune didn't have that eye-catching clean design that made the ipod so appealing.

But that wasn't a big priority to me, as I immediatly noticed that the zune is

clothed in rubberized plastic. This proves to be effective because the zune is

practically immune to scratches and scuffs, unlike the ipod video, which we all know

to be a scratch-magnet. In my opinion, this is easily the most durable hard-drive

based player on the market. It didn't have that cheap feel at all! This will save you

money on buying a protective case for sure. While a clickwheel is noticeably absent,

a circular thumb pad is a nice alternative because it allows you to breeze through

song lists without moving your thumb too much. In fact, I believe whizzing by on your

songlists are better than the ipod's clickwheel because, instead of tiring out your

thumb, all you have to do on the zune is hold down the click button. The first

letters of each title pop up as you scroll down, which makes this point very

effective. You can also see tiny thumbnails of album art when you select an artist.

The thumb pad also functions as a volume control/rewind/fast forward/previous

song/next song. In addition to the thumb pad, a back button and play/pause button

complements the the interface well. Microsoft managed to design the zune to make it

fun, fuctional, and very easy to use.

-Zune Marketplace: A proprietary music store that has a very nice selection of music,

though no videos at this time. How could microsoft one-up the domineering Itunes? The

clincher here is the Zune pass for $14.99. This means that, for that price per month,

you can download an unlimited amount of music to your Zune. Of course, if you stop

paying, all of your music that you downloaded from the service is erased.

Accessories: Even at its launch, the zune had plenty of accessories, even for a more

advanced user. Such accessories include a travel kit, home kit, sound dock, and

carrying case. Finding these accessories should not be too much of a problem.

Yes, I was really excited when I got my Zune. I thought, "This has got to be better

than an ipod!". Boy, was I wrong! In fact, I even gave this cool little device a

second chance by exchanging it for a new one, yet I ran into the same problems.

My Problems:

-Screen: If you look closely, the photos, video, and album art are noticeably fuzzy.

Both the zune and the ipod have the very same resolution, 320 by 240 pixel

resolution. However, with the zune's larger screen, this will cause the screen to be

dull. Think of it this way, the pixels in the zune have more of a screen to work

with.

-Size: The Zune is noticeably bigger than many of its counterparts. It is even larger

than the 80 gb ipod! However, the media likes to blow up the zune in pictures much

bigger than it really is. The zune in one's hand really isn't so bulky at all and

feels comfortable. It isn't the greatest pocketable device, but most should be happy.

All of those who enjoy exercising with their zune should be aware that, since the

zune is hard-drive based and contains internal moving parts, rough use may cause the

zune to break easily.

-Battery: For many advanced users, the fact that the zune does not have a removale,

replacebale battery may deter them. This is forgivable, as few mp3 players have this

handy feature. However, the Zune sets itself apart in a negative way from its

competitors through its unreliable battery. As you know, the battery is stated at 14

hours, an unrealistic estimate under normal playing conditions. With a volume level

at 8, dimmest brightness setting, auto dim, no wallpaper, and viewing no pictures or

video, I managed to get between 6-8 hours. For a hard drive player, this is pretty

bad. On a side note, do not depend on the battery meter for accurate charging levels,

as the meter fluctuates frequently.

-Music: Okay, this is what you are REALLY paying for. Isn't this what you are looking

for in an mp3 player? I sure am. I have done a side-by-side comparasin with both the

zune and the ipod and the sound quality is the same, nothing different. I do not

believe the claim that "4 out of 6 listeners perfer the zune's audio qulaity versus

the ipod". In short, both sound fine, although microsoft didn't one-up apple on this

critical point. However, if you have the golden ears of an audiophile (which few of

us do), you may be disappointed. Unlike most modern mp3 players, gapless playback is

missing from the zune.

-Wireless: A fairly common complaint. If you read the advertisement's fine print for

wireless sharing, you will notice that you can only play a recieved song 3 times

within 3 days, whichever comes first. Even if you stop a recieved song in the middle

of play, that still counts as one play. Even your homemade tracks fall under this

rule! This rule only applies to music. Videos cannot be shared, although pictures are

the recipient's to keep. Do not expect to ever use this feature, as i've never found

another zune to share with. Microsoft over-estimates itself by thinking that the zune

will be so popular that everyone will use it, thus the wireless feature.

-Software: This is, personally, my biggest gripe. The first impression I had with the

Zune's software was that it was basically a proprietary copy of microsoft's OWN media

player application! However, the software is a wolf in sheep's clothing. Sure, the

zune software is easy to use like its counterpart. But one might wonder why microsoft

is making the user waste their time with more unecessary software when they have

their own windows-branded media player application. As you know, you MUST use the

zune software in order to put your content onto the zune. No drag-and-drop here. The

problem here is the bugs it has. Even though I have all of my software updated, the

software still managed to crash my computer every single time. This isn't the only

problem, though. Its not uncommon to hear users complain that their music gets erased

during syncing for no apparent reason. I also am having issues with album art, as the

zune cannot retrieve album art as well as itunes. This might not be a problem for a

few people, but beware that you will most likely have to paste album art, which can

be time-consuming

-Zune Marketplace: The selection is great, by the way. I would advise on holding off

on buying anything from the marketplace, as the music has DRM and will therefore ONLY

play on the Zune. But the real problem here is thecurrency used to pay for these

songs: Microsoft Points. One song costs 79 points, which is equivalent to about 99

cents, the same as most online muisc stores. This can be problematic, as one can

mistake the points for cents. Also, the blocks of of points purchased will round off

with a remainder, which means that you wont be using up all of your points. This in

turn translates to more money for microsoft

-Compatibility: Perhaps the device's achille's heel is its compatibility. The ipod

became popular because it was compatible with BOTH a mac and a pc. The zune is only

compatible with a pc. Interestingly, since msn is part of the microsoft network,

users will be unable to transfer purchased songs from such msn-backed digital music

stores as yahoo, napster, and rhapsody. If you wanted to transfer your music from the

device's hard-drive onto another computer, you cannot do that, as the zune cannot be

used as an external hard drive. The zune also has lukewarm support for music, video,

and photo formats

-Hidden Costs: Like the ipod, microsoft decided to cut costs by not including a

sorely-needed a/c adaptor in the package. With terrible battery life, you MUST have

an ac adaptor, so add another $30 or so to the total cost. Since the zune, like the

ipod has mediocore sound quality at best, expect to add more money for decent

earbuds. However, unlike the ipod, the Zune has an unecessary tax. Yes, if you read

up on the zune a bit, you will notice that the universal music label gets a cut of

each zune sold. Universal believes that users will ineviatbly take away their profits

by stealing music. Some of us like obeying the law and download our music legally,

but that doesn't matter because we are all still charged the same tax. Hmmm...makes

you want to go out and steal music, doesn't it?

-Price: As of now, its not uncommon to see prices on the zune be slashed from 20% or

more. Some stores even give away accessories for free just for buying the zune. At

first, this sounds great to the consumer, but there is a deeper meaning. It can't be

a good sign when nearly all retailers slash prices on the zune, even when the device

is a little over 6 months old. This can only show that microsoft is desperate to get

rid of their zune, perhaps maybe because they are working on a better product. Its

possible that when a new zune comes out, you will be saddled with a sub-standard

generation.

My Overall Impressions: This device was obviously created as a direct competitor to

the Ipod. I mean, microsoft and apple are rivals. Its pretty hard not to notice this

fact when both have proprietary digital music stores. However, its blatantly clear

that apple has the lead, as the ipod has been around since 2001 and the Itunes store

since 2003. Thats alot of sales in that time! I dont think that there are any mind-

blowing features on the zune that would make ipod users switch, especially since most

of the music purchased on itunes is proprietary, in addition to the ipod being the #1

legal download site for music.

The Bottom Line: I love the Zune. I really do. I was even shocked by my first zune to

take it back and start fresh with a new one. Thats how much I really tried to like

the zune. But I notice that my forced efforts towards liking the zune are blatantly

obvious. Liking any product shouldn't have to take much effort at all. Thats the

secret to a consumer liking a quality product.

It's pretty clear by now that microsoft is working on a better zune, as sales haven't

been stellar, though not terrible either. Even with the first generation zune, its

clear that this product has enormous potential if improved in the future. Improving

on the wireless can only do good. Like many dissatisfied users, I really felt that

this product was "half-baked", that is, this seemed more like a prototype than a

full-fledged "ipod killer".

My personal advice to each user is to avoid the zune...for now. I'm not saying that

you should get an ipod, im only giving you the straight facts on the zune's ultimate

competition. It's not uncommon to hear a TON of ipod complaints. Then again, just

keepin mind that, with anything popular, especially a really hot product, there will

bepeople having problems. A few really great alternatives include the ipod, creative

zen vision m/v plus, and the sandisk sansa. Technophiles might like to check out

mediaplayers manufactured by archos and cowon.
Reply:Love it!

OpenOffice Impress is equivalent to Microsoft PowerPoint and can open PowerPoint files, edit them, and save as a PowerPoint file.

OpenOffice (free)

http://www.openoffice.org/

It is compatible with most Microsoft Office applications.

Can import from MS application and export to MS application unless noted:

Base = Access

Calc = Excel

Draw = Similar to Publisher but not directly compatible

Math (Create equations) =No equivalent

Impress = PowerPoint

Writer = Microsoft Word

No equivalent = Office Outlook
Reply:Powerpoint can't be downloaded legally.

But, there is a great open-source (i.e. free) alternative that offers just as much functionality as PowerPoint does.

It's called OpenOffice, and can be downloaded for free at http://www.openoffice.org.

It's a free alternative to using Microsoft's products, and has a Word Processor, Spreadsheet, Equation Creator, Database Program and a Graphics Application.
Reply:Powerpoint is not free but you can download open office which is compatible with powerpoint.
Reply:http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir...
Reply:You can't legally download it for free.

Microsoft??

if i buy the mocrosoft office thing and install it into my computer will my computer stop saying "this copy of mocrosoft is not genuine"

Microsoft??
The copy if bought legally will be a genuine copy so you will stop getting those messages unless of course xp is also pirated and if genuine it allows you to get proper updates for your software to keep updated from Microsoft loopholes.
Reply:it might not install.
Reply:it depends on if you downloaded the other copy illegally but it should.
Reply:Sure it will. Microsoft has been making this whole big, massive campaign to incentivate the originality of their products.

When you buy something for Microsoft and you buy it originally, all your 'legality' issues are off. So, answering to your question, if you buy legal from Microsoft, yes, you will stop receiving those horrible, unconfortable messges.

Hope to have been useful.
Reply:Ha, sounds like you bought a stolen copy of Windows XP or a computer system with a stolen copy of Windows XP. Not much help but to buy a legitimate version of XP and then install the valid CD key.

I would try to get my money back if I bought it from an individual or if by chance it was a factory computer such as dell, gateway, emachine or anything like that and you recently bought it call them up and complain. Microsoft office should have nothing to do with that.
Reply:If you bought a copy believing that it was genuine, you should contact Microsoft. They will help you out.

Microsoft?

Is it possible to either upgrade or download Word 2007 for free.

Microsoft?
You can get a 90-day trial from Microsoft.

Or you can go to http://www.openoffice.org and get OpenOffice.org for free. It has a word processor (like Word), spreadsheet (like Excel), presentations (like PowerPoint), database (similar to Access) and a graphics design program (like, well.... like Corel Draw), but OpenOffice.org is 100% free, safe and legal. It also opens and saves Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint file formats, is available in many languages, Except for a few things at work when I absolutely have to have MS Office, and except for Outlook at work, I use OpenOffice.org for everything at work and at home.
Reply:There is a trial (90-day) version you can download at http://www.microsoft.com/office
Reply:you can get a free trial at their website, its pretty sweet

Microsoft....?

what microsoft program is used to creat a web page?

also any additional help would be wonderful!

Microsoft....?
It's called MIcrosoft Front Page. Here's the link:

www.microsoft.com/frontpage/

But you should consider using Dreamweaver, not many people actually use front page, dreamweaver is considered the web standard by many:

www.adobe.com/products/dreamweaver/
Reply:You could try Microsoft Frontpage or the new Microsoft Expression Studio ;)
Reply:Frontpage will definatly work
Reply:Frontpage, But Dreamweaver is much better

Microsoft???

There is a program at my school that is made by Microsoft that you can make brochures with. Any idea what the program is called and about how much it would cost to buy???

Microsoft???
Microsoft Office Publisher. you can get Microsoft Office 2007 or 2003 Editions that include Publisher its usually about $250 + or buy publisher for about $150

http://us20.trymicrosoftoffice.com/defau...
Reply:That's Microsoft Publisher 2007.

You can buy it direct from Microsoft at the following website and you can download a free 30 day trial first.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publis...
Reply:Probably Microsoft Publisher. You can try searching for it on Google or Microsoft website. There may be other free alternatives out there, though.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publis...
Reply:its just the plane microsoft word.. you just go to file and click on new works template
Reply:Most schools get the Microsoft Office package, also if its school wide network and the net. file got corrupted, it may cost the school a bit to load it onto evey computer...
Reply:I think what you are on about is probably Microsoft publisher (not completely sure) i used it once but it came as a package, go for open source software it crashes less often and best of all its free, just google it
Reply:brochures? you can make them simply with most office programs. There is no need to pay for the high dollar programs that Microsoft offers. Simply use openoffice. It is freeware and in my honest opinion an all around more stable and flexible program. go to openoffice.org and download. then simply search brochure (or pamphlet) under the help menu. and there are lots of neat ideas on there website.

Microsoft?

IS IT POSSIBLE TO UPGRADE TO MICROSOFT 07 FOR FREE(OR UPGRAGE FOR FREE.

Microsoft?
.

If you mean to upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 7

yes it's free.

But a word of caution: DON'T !!!!

Many folks that have, are switching back to IE6

IE7 is found to be full of problems, just yet...

wait a year.

IE6 has proven to work well and smoothly...why move into problems with IE7?

If you don't heed my recommendation,

and are determined to use IE7

go to MS Updates and download it.

...uh, and when you decide you hate it

just go to Add/Remove programs on your computer to DELETE it and you pc shoud automatically revert to IE6.

Reply:You mean Explorer 7, go to windowsupdate icon on desktop and click on that. Then follow directions on downloading it.

Microsoft?

Do You think Microsoft will create more Windows after Vista? How many do think they will be?Will any new company destory them in the computer business?

Microsoft?
Microsoft will definatly keep on crating more windows. Even if anyone else makes a better OS, Microsoft can just buy them and take over. Unless it is Apple, which they maybe able to.
Reply:Yes. They will continue for a VERY long time.
Reply:I wouldn't be surprised to see the downfall in the next few years. Very rarely does someone continue to have dominance for this long in the computer industry. Look no further then IBM, Intel, Apple etc. The problem is MS has themselves so tightly spun around every IT manager's finger it'll take years to convince them there's actual better products out there. Most Microsoft shops are very anti anything Microsoft, which is likely more due to the lack of understanding / knowledge of other systems so they do whatever they can to ensure their company stays Microsoft (to ensure they keep their job).

I think as the previous person mentioned, if anyone can steal MS's thunder it will be Google. Google has a userbase who are very loyal, and it may just convince them to check out whatever Google has to offer regardless of whether its any good. I'd also love to see Apple release OSX for intel PC's.. I know it would have the potential to hurt their hardware business but its so much better of an operating system.

As well Ubuntu has a kick a$$ linux bundle.. its unlikely linux will ever steal enough users away to hurt Microsoft though unless Google somehow got involved and threw a ton of $ at it.
Reply:Given the time frame between release of Windows XP SP2 and Vista, figure on more releases of Vista, as that is the replacement for XP...as the technology keeps on evolving, expect Microsoft to be on thecutting edge of new os's based on Vista and whatever the next OS is called.
Reply:Google is going to become a good competitor to Microsoft with a new operating system supposedly coming out by 2012.

But Microsoft will hold it's own no matter what. They're a solid company. I see many more versions of an operating system built by them. I think that the market will actually move more towards hand held devices as well. It is going to be exciting to see what happens in the next decade or so.

Cheers, and good luck. Happy Holidays :)
Reply:No 'company' wants to waste their resources fighting a bunch of loony toon characters with lots of cash they got from felon theft, as Microsoft is convicted of, and in October 2006, had their probation extended for THREE MORE YEARS!!!

Even the pros agree that it looks like 'the gang who couldn't shoot straight' over at Redmond. And, truly, that is a great shame and a horrible waste of some really fantastic resources!

But, the idiots at the top who have "Monkey Boy Script' films running on youtube, have fragmented all the teams, and have them competing with each other, instead of all working to contribute their best towards a creative goal!

So, what is taking Microsoft down, is their own internal SNAFU, plus the opportunity for the million grassroots programmers who are scattered over the world, and who contribute to the 600+ FREE and Open Source Operating Systems, and the 135,000 FOSS, because they have a great passion and love of their art.

The 600 FREE GNU/Linux systems are each hosted, built, offered, by small cottage industry and a few huge conglomerates. Trying to stomp them all out would deplete Microsoft of all their financial resources.

Now, 83% of ALL businesses report they run on the Internet on Linux. They also reported, in a recent survey, that they run, or, will switch most, if not all, internal systems over to GNU/Linux before they would go to VISTA.

Microsoft runs 45,000 GNU/Linux computers for Microsoft.com, Hotmail.com, MSN.com, all routers, firewalls, and the Lab 400.

You should try a Live CDrom, that boots in CDrom, Runs in RAMdisc, can save to the Microsoft folder! Virus proof, and upto 50X faster than Microsoft! Includes 1900 games, programs, suites, browsers, MP3 and Ogg media apps. http://pclinuxos.com

310 more at http://livecdlist.com

100 top distros at http://distrowatch.com with upto 600 MORE on sub pages!

Reply:you will have to buy it.
Reply:you could buy it or get the CD from a friend

When I download the service pack 2 for windows XP from microsoft.com is it the whole thing or do I have to actually connect the computer to the internet to get it or can I download it to a removeable drive?

MICROSOFT ?
In the net are a lot of guides for converting your actual Windows XP CD into a copy of Windows XP with SP2 applied.
Reply:you can save service pack 2 onto disk, it updates the whole operating system and takes a while. good luck
Reply:If you download the Network Installation Package, it's the entire 266 MB package and you won't be required to be online when it's installed. It can be downloaded to a removeable drive and installed on other PCs that don't have an internet connection.

Download straight from Microsoft:
